A Message About Tolerance

This is a status update that was posted on a Twilight Sparkle page on Facebook. I wanted as many people as possible to see this because it couldn't be more true. THIS is a reason why I like My Little Pony so much is because this is the kind of stuff it promotes.

"I just wanted to take a moment to remind you all of something.. We were all born from the same elements from the supernovae of dying stars. We were all born onto the same planet, conceived in the same way, born through the same way and ultimately we all face the same fate. I don't care what anypony says or does, one life is of the same value as another regardless of personal accomplishments, and you will never have the right to talk down to me, nor will I ever have the right to talk down to you. Someponies would do very well to remember that!"

I hope everyone who reads this takes this message to heart.

Why I Love Avatar

In addition to being a brony, singer, and writer, I am also a VERY passionate fan of James Cameron's Avatar. I have attended 3 large meet ups (2 last year and 1, the largest yet, this July.) of passionate Avatar fans in Seattle, WA. I have also met the producer Jon Landau and Dr. Paul Frommer, creator of the Na'vi language. Speaking of the Na'vi language, I am so much of an Avatar fan that I have actually learned to speak Na'vi over the past 2 years. Allow me to demonstrate: Lì'fyari leNa'vi perlltxe, oeru sunu fìtxan Uniltìrantokx a mezìsìto aftawnem nolume oel fya'ot a plltxe nìNa'vi. That's a translation of the sentence beginning with "Speaking of the Na'vi language...". I would like to share with you all the essay I wrote when I was applying to the University of Redlands last year about why I love Avatar. Avatar is also the reason that I heard about U of R and started going there. I have a friend there who I met through the Avatar fan community. Anyway, here it is, enjoy :)

March 23, 2010 was indeed an interesting day in my life. I had heard very few things about a movie called Avatar but knew that I wanted to see it. I hadn’t planned anything for the March 23rd, so I set out for the theater and my bus arrived 15 minutes before a showing was going to start. The movie began at 4:15pm. When it was done, I had no idea what had just hit me. I literally had to catch my breath because it felt like I had been holding it through the entire movie. I was so dazed I could barely walk. It was on that day that my life took a very sharp turn. I entered the world of Pandora.

Avatar gave me a chance to leave Earth and enter this world where everything is pure and pristine, world where everything is literally connected to each other. Seeing the way the Na’vi lived; closely connected, respecting their land, and taking only that which they need from it; really made me think about how humans are living currently. Avatar really shed a light on this, a light that is brighter than some would like it to be. Whether we want to face it or not, we are killing our planet. With our constant pollution, exploiting of Earth’s natural resources, and our land development, it’s no wonder the planet is almost dead in 2154. One of my favorite lines from the movie is “All energy is only borrowed, and one day you have to give it back.” –Neytiri <3 If we don’t give back to our planet that which we take, one day, there will be nothing left.

The thing I love most about the Na’vi is the fact they are able to literally connect to each other and their world through direct neural interface, something that humans can never achieve. At least not without the aid of some kind of technology. This is evidenced in the final battle scene between Neytiri and Quaritch. While Neytiri is able to fight freely from the back of her thanator, Quaritch must remain ensheathed in his giant metal AMP suit without which he wouldn’t stand a chance. He wouldn’t even be able to breathe the air of Pandora. Even with the technological advances we’ve made 150 years in the future, we are still only able to interact with the outside world through physical manipulation.

The thing I love most about the movie as a whole is the concept of the Avatar Program. Writer Nicholas T. Cox sums this up perfectly in his essay If I Could Just Leave My Body For a Night. He writes, “That line [‘If I could just leave my body for a night’] expresses in the simplest terms possible what may well be the deepest, strongest, most tragically impossible desire a human being can have, and Avatar dares to let us see that desire gratified. That, above all else, is perhaps the secret of the movie's appeal: it shows us a world in which technology has made it possible, at least to an extent, for human beings to leave their bodies and enter into an existence that, unlike ours, is truly worthy of its bearers. Beneath all our idealistic fantasies of a perfect world, it is ultimately the inescapable limitations of our own bodies, our hated corporeal frailty—signified just as much by Dr. Grace's smoking habit as by Jake's disability—that is the source of our pain, and from that pain we will never be free.  Avatar, though, lets us almost believe, if only for a few hours, that someday we might be.”

I think the thing that has affected me the most from seeing Avatar isn’t something in the movie, but what happened after the movie. As I said earlier, at the end of the movie, I literally had to catch my breath because it felt like I had been holding it through the entire movie. No movie has ever had that effect on me. I saw it for a 2nd time in less than 24 hours and it had the same effect, which still hasn’t worn off. After seeing Avatar (a few times), I immediately visited the movie’s website and found out that there was a whole language involved with the movie. Being as enamored as I was, I had to learn it. Shortly after I began studying, I began meeting people online who had been studying since December ’09 who helped me with it. They quickly became good friends of mine and I am still in regular contact with them. We are planning to meet in spring and summer. I think this is the greatest thing Avatar has done for me is brought me these new, amazing friends. I never thought that so much could come out of just seeing a movie. Avatar will forever be a part of who I am.

A New Project I Am Working On

Hello again everyone. As I mentioned in a previous post, I am a singer. Tho, probably not like any male singer you've heard. I am what is called a countertenor, which basically means I can sing as high as a female soprano. This kind of voice type was popular in the Renaissance/Baroque eras and is not too common anymore. It's one of the things that makes me unique :)

This is a short sample of a new project I am working on. I am recording O Magnum Mysterium by Cristobal de Morales in 4 part treble harmony. This will not be an easy project so it may be a little while before I have the finished product.

Also, on my Soundcloud website, you will find other multiple harmony songs that I recorded; 2 of which are in Na'vi, the language from Avatar :) Hope everyone enjoys.

By the way, I'm a brony

Well the title pretty much says it all. Tho ever since I became a brony, I've been hearing about mixed views of the brony community. A couple nights ago while searching for pony pics, I came across an article written by a 'concerned mom.' She was worried about grown men watching the show while holding little pink pony figures and getting turned on and she said that bronies were like a step below being a child molester. That part insulted me. I'm a grown man and I like My Little Pony and I'm not afraid to admit it. That certainly doesn't mean that I get turned on watching the show, nor do I molest children. That is disgusting. Fluttershy is my favorite pony because she reminds me of how I was when I was little, shy and quiet. Sure, MLP is geared toward little girls, but that doesn't mean I can't watch it as a 22 year old man. I have a friend who's older than me and even more of a brony than I am. I don't understand what's wrong with liking a show that promotes values like friendship, tolerance, caring, loyalty, laughter, generosity, kindness and more. It's a lot better than other things I could be in to. I wish some people would stop looking at the brony community so negatively.

Just wanted to rant that out.

CDs for sale soon!

For those who don't know I am a singer and have been singing for 15 years now. I sang my first solo in El Paso, TX at my church at 3 years old. Music (specifically singing) is something I've always had a natural talent for. I started formal voice training my junior year of high school and continued through college. While I was studying at the University of Redlands in Redlands, CA, I had the opportunity to create a full length album CD of my work. I will have this CD on sale for $10 in a week or so. I will also try to get some sample songs on here as well. Stay tuned :)

Characters from Prohibited Passion

These are the characters, designed by Lara Yokoshima, that I am using in my story :) It's a funny story how I discovered these characters...I was actually on a Google search for Avatar pics when I noticed the pic of Evania. Of course I didn't know it was him at the time, but I was very intrigued and so I clicked his picture and I was taken to Lara's website where I found the rest of the characters and totally fell in love with them...especially Brayden lol.

This sexy guy is Brayden Kenward. His species is known as the Anubiset. They are all male. They are bred from canine DNA so the Anubiset are human/dog hybrids.  I never thought a dog-man could be so hot! Hehe!

This is Liam Cynard, another sexy Anubiset.

Here are headshots of the 4 main Anubiset characters:

Here are full body shots of them

This is Evania. His species is known as the Bastit. They are bred from feline DNA, so they are human/cat hybrids. He's pretty cute, tho I am partial to the Anubiset ;) Also before you click here, this pic is ***NSFW*** (Not safe for work)

This is my character Kejehara, another Bastit, drawn by Lara :) I LOVE how it turned out, she captured him perfectly :) Despite his feminine appearance, he is actually a male character. Bastits are male and female, have various jobs, and come in different shapes and sizes. One of the jobs they have is being a sexual pet. The sexual Bastits are the submissive ones when providing their services, so even the males have feminine appearances.

This is Rosette, another male Bastit.

This is Kejehara and Evania being the cute little Bastit best friends that they are :) (A drawing I commissioned from Lara)

This is Isha. I may or may not be using him in my story, haven't decided yet. His species is known as the Skemit. It's interesting how the Skemit evolved, but for now I will just say they are descendants of the Bastit.

If you would like to see more of Lara's art you can check out her website: http://yokoshima.com.mx/blog/. But fair warning: be careful where you click if you are not into Yaoi. There are some VERY NSFW pictures here. If you are not familiar with what Yaoi is, click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoi
